The Coven of Wiches

I love a good sandwich. Much like tacos, they are a great portable meal, and there are endless combinations of fillings available.

One of my favourite sandwiches has always been a Reuben. Traditionally, a Reuben includes pastrami or corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Russian dressing on grilled rye bread. While it’s an amazing combination of flavours, it’s very much not vegan.

A Little Vegan Magic in Brixton

So, when I learned there was a vegan restaurant Brixton making a plant-based version of a Reuben, it quickly got added to my list. The Coven of Wiches was originally located in Walthamstow but recently moved, in August 2026, to the southernmost end of the Victoria Line in Brixton.

Having missed the chance to visit them in Walthamstow, getting to Brixton during their opening week became a priority. The shop is located at 14D Market Row in Brixton Market, and its bright yellow storefront makes it difficult to miss.

If you’ve never been to Brixton Market, it’s definitely worth a visit. Walk around and take in everything it has to offer, but make sure you stop by The Coven of Wiches for some tasty food.

As you can probably imagine from the name, The Coven of Wiches is seriously cool. The place is small, but there is some seating outside and a small bar inside.

What I Tried at Coven of Wiches

This is where I might disappoint you a little. Usually, my partner and I order different things so there is a variety of food to comment on. This time, however, we both ordered the Reuben. To be fair, he’d heard me rave about this type of sandwich for a long time, so his curiosity was high.

We also ordered drinks. My partner had a beer, which was nice and refreshing. I was tempted by their Bloody Mary — or Bloody Mabel, as they call it. I’m a big fan of a good, spicy Bloody Mary, but they aren’t always vegan, so I jumped at the chance to have one.

I was not disappointed. While I would have added a couple of splashes of Tabasco — I did mention that I like them spicy — it was a wonderful drink.

Now for those sandwiches.

You know when you’ve anticipated something for so long that, when you finally have it, it can be disappointing? No problem with that here.

There was nothing disappointing about The Coven of Wiches’ Reuben. It’s stacked high with Vastrami, vegan cheese, sauerkraut, sliced pickles and dressing. The sourdough rye bread was fresh and grilled just right.

Vegan Reuben at The Coven of Wiches

The Reuben is currently priced at £12 for a regular size, and it’s well worth the price. They do not skimp on the ingredients. In fact, the sandwich was so substantial that I had to wrap up half of mine to eat later because the first half managed to fill me up.

Would I Go Back? Absolutely

I’ll definitely be heading back to The Coven of Wiches. Next time, maybe we’ll try their truffle mac & cheese and one of their other sandwiches. It will be difficult not to get that Reuben again, but if their other offerings are even half as delicious, it will be worth branching out.

As with all the vegan places I recommend, I’d love to see The Coven of Wiches do well in their new location.
