Club Mexicana

Having grown up in the desert Southwest of the United States, there is one thing I miss after moving to London and going vegan: Mexican food. Finding satisfying vegan Mexican food in London isn’t always easy. I love tacos, enchiladas and tamales, but they don’t always lend themselves easily to being veganised.

I do have a cookbook called Comida Casera by Dora Ramirez that I need to spend more time with, but sometimes a girl just wants to go out and get some decent Mexican food. That’s where Club Mexicana comes in.

Vegan Tacos, Burritos and Nachos

I discovered Club Mexicana several years ago. Although it isn’t traditional Mexican food, it markets itself as Mexican-inspired. And when you’re craving a taco — because I will argue that tacos are the perfect food — Club Mexicana does an excellent job of satisfying that craving.

I’m a sucker for the BBQ Short ‘Rib’ tacos, but I also love the Baja To-Fish tacos. On our most recent visit, my partner broke with his tradition of ordering the fish tacos and tried the Al Pastor tacos instead. The menu describes them as “adobo-marinated ‘shawarma’, onion salsa, salsa verde and charred pineapple.” He was quite impressed.

Club Mexicana doesn’t stop at tacos. They also serve burritos that are so big that, the one time I ordered one, I had to wrap up the rest and bring it home. Their nachos are delightful too. And don’t forget the chips and guac — they make a great addition to the meal.

Where to Find Club Mexicana in London

If there is one negative thing I would note about Club Mexicana, it’s that the locations seem to keep changing. They currently have locations at Mercato Mayfair in St Mark’s Church and BoxHall City near Liverpool Street. Their Leicester Square location is permanently closed, as is the one at Kingly Court.

Both current locations are very nice, but I would especially recommend the Mayfair one, if only to see the architecture of the church-turned-food hall. It’s an impressive sight. You can also order a margarita at that location!

Give It a Try

Unlike some of the other restaurants I’ve recommended, Club Mexicana is a very casual and reasonably priced place to enjoy vegan food. It’s a great option for a quick lunch or dinner while you’re out and about in London.

While it isn’t a traditional Mexican restaurant, Club Mexicana has really nailed the flavours that work well. It offers an interesting and tasty take on one of my favourite types of food.

You can have a look at the menus and find more information about the locations on the Club Mexicana website.
