Week 3 Begins

Well it’s almost 9am in what should be sunny Las Vegas. At 8:15am I finished Day 1 of Week 3 of C25K. I got up early, got dressed, brushed my teeth and once I was sure it wasn’t raining (just really ugly cloudy) I started the day’s run. Yes, friends, it hasn’t even been two weeks since beginning the program but because I’ve managed to keep on the every-other-day track consistently (with the help of some gently nudging from my friends) Week 3 has begun!

So here is what I’ve learned as I begin the exit the first third of this program. The first half of my workout is literally all uphill. Granted, I’m in Vegas so uphill is not uphill like it is in some places. Let’s just say it’s a steady incline that when it rains enough the road becomes a raging river (and no I’m not overstating that). This uphill climb sucks. There really is no way to sugar coat it. Today’s run involves a couple three-minute runs which is doubled from last week. That first three-minute run uphill reminded me that, no, I’m not in shape. I literally talked my self through it. “Keep running, don’t stop. You’re almost there….THANK GOD (as the ding ding ding sounded)” It was mind and heart over legs. It was kind of scary because the legs really started thinking on their own and it was not positive thinking. They wanted to stop and walk even though my mind was saying “keep moving.” But in the end I made it through and it was a nice feeling.

Another thing I’ve learned is I’m either a better runner at night after work than in the morning. I have a strict routine on my running work nights. I refuse to sit down or start anything when I get home. I say hello to my daughter and run upstairs to change. If I sit or get distracted I’m more than likely going to find a reason not to run. It has worked. On the weekends I run in the morning before breakfast and, most importantly, before coffee. Coffee is my incentive. Get the run done and I get one of my favorite things. Unfortunately, I’m also running on empty and I’m starting to think that’s a detriment. No fuel seems to equal less ability to get the body really moving. It’s something I will need to work on.

Last thing and maybe I’m not the only person outside running who notices this….What is the heck up with people not picking up their dog’s poop!? Yes, I’m serious. I counted four piles on the sidewalk on my 2-mile trek just today! Hello, folks, I have a dog. I pick up every pile he leaves. It’s not difficult. It’s a good use for all those plastic grocery bags you keep under your sink! I run at night, mostly, so I have to be very careful. I think it’s something people walking or running on the sidewalk should not have to worry about. That’s all I’ll say although I had plenty going through my mind this morning as I noticed the abundance of piles!

Thanks for reading (if you made it this far!) Hope you all have a wonderful day!
